Toddling Times Two

I now officially have two toddlers. Sebastian has been walking way more than crawling (although he still stumbles a lot) and Collette hasn't crawled for a couple of weeks now. Funny how this changes how I view them but really, not much else. At least not immediately. I know this is just the beginning of their toddlerhood and walking is a huge jumping off point for other toddler milestones but, in our day to day lives, not much has changed. I don't have to babyproof anything new. I know once spring arrives and we are out at parks, I will understand what all the other twin moms talk about when they say, "wait 'til they're walking!" For now though, it's just pretty cute to see my no-longer-babies toddle around the house.

Thanks to everyone for your advice on my post yesterday. Obviously, a lot of it was just venting, like we all need to do from time to time. As for the SAHM vs. working mom thing, I know there is no right or wrong answer. And regardless of how I feel sometimes, I know that being a SAHM is the best for our family right now. It will always be isolating, I think. That's just life. Playdates and the like help, but it's not the same as going to your job everyday and interacting with other like-minded adults. On the flip side, working outside of the home will always mean missing time with your kids. There's no perfect solution. If there were one, everyone would do it. So, thanks for listening and commiserating.

  1. Congrats on the toddling. You're right, I look back at photos of my two and think, "Yes, they were walking, but they were still babies!!!" They were certainly more like their baby selves at 11 months than their current toddler selves, even if they were walking.

I don't think everyone would use a "perfect" solution. There's no one size fits all. Stay at home parenthood wouldn't work for either my husband or for me, and our family is better off for recognizing that off the bat. Missing Jessie's first step is FAR outweighed by the patience that getting away to my grown-up job buys me. Honestly, I wouldn't want the stay-at-home version of me to raise our kids!

There are other parents for whom working outside the home is unimaginable. It takes all types, and slowly adjusting to the idea that my daughters may choose a different path than I did.

  3. Your right. There is no right or wrong. I sometimes have days like you had yesterday, and think can I do this? But then, I leave them for just an hour, and I can't wait to see them again. Its all about finding balance. The summer is so much better for SAHM's. :)

  5. Oh yes, with two toddling toddlers you're certainly in for a whole new kind of fun! :o)

Sorry to read that you're experiencing some SAHM blues lately. You're absolutely right about all of it, and so many of us can relate. Hopefully you'll find some great ways to get out and about. I was pretty housebound (by choice) for the first year, and although it's a lot of work, it's nice to know that we now have places to go and people to see (translate- other moms for me to talk to). We don't have the money for classes, but enjoy lots of free activities like storytimes and drop in playgroups at local churches. And we just bought a multipass at Together in Motion ($69 for 14 visits, so roughly $2.50 per kid per visit).

The SAHM role has it's challenges, but it really sounds like you're doing a great job. Hang it there! More fun is just around the corner.
