Apparently, I cannot subtract.

Us MoTs often get a lot of the same lines, like "wow, double trouble", "gosh, you've got your hands full!" or even the not so nice "better you than me." One line even inspired a GREAT blog - "How DO you do it??"

But the one that really gets under my skin, and I don't know why because, really, it's harmless, is "well, since they're your first, you don't know the difference, right?" Yes, actually. I do know the difference. It's 1. 2-1=1. I'm a certified high school math teacher but even without those crazy credentials, I think I could figure it out.

Don't get me wrong - I know what they mean. I definitely did not know what to expect before I had the twins because I had nothing to compare it to. In that sense, ignorance was bliss. However, I am no longer ignorant. I know how long it takes to feed two babies. I also know how long it takes to feed one. Half as much as two. (that's division!) I can imagine what it would be like to change 1 diaper at a time instead of 2. I can also picture my nursery with one crib, one bottle warmer, one rocking baby.

Of course, I don't want to picture my life with one. Because I can subtract. And divide. One less smiling face in the morning. Half as many cuddles. Ya, I know the difference. I'm just not interested in it.

  1. Amen, Sister!
    LOVE this post. :)

(and you know, at one point, I actually thought I'd like another set...I've been spoiled by two! ;) )

  2. I hear you. I would never ever trade having 2 for 1 but it takes twice as long to get the kids ready in the morning. And you have to listen to one whine while you are spooning food into the other (okay, so only Ned whines but you know what I mean). However I'd probably say that it is only 1.5 times the work since they are on the same schedule. If I had an infant and toddler I'd say that was 2.5 times the work.

  3. P.S. You can skip the "approval" part of the comments. Once they publish you can delete any inappropriate comments. I found that easier than actually screening each comment.

  4. Two? Two is nothing...i expect to see at least 2 more (that makes 4!) coming out of that belly!!! :) My precious niece & nephew are sooo adorable that you are obligated to continue reproducing. That's the way it works- says me! :P
